Value of Hand Raising Parrot Chicks
The purpose of hand raising parrot chicks is thus;
1.To produce a pet parrot, imprinted at a very young age
2.To induce the parent to produce a second and third nest during the breeding season.
The other words we are trying to increase the quantity and improve the quality of parrot chicks through artificial breeding using skill and technology. These pet parrot chicks will totally not be able to take care of themselves if released to the wild. They are not raised for the purpose to replenish the declining populations in the wild if the species is threatened. Here we must not confuse the issue of wildlife conservation. However Aviculture does indirectly contribute to wildlife conservation by supplying the market demand with the appropriate products; thus decreasing the need to take from the wild. Chicks taken from the wild suffer high mortality rate due to stress in transportation, disease and the lack of special cares needed by parrot chicks at that age, which are not provided by trappers and traders.
